If You’re Not Eligible for an NZeTA – Here’s What to Do

Not everyone heading to New Zealand is eligible to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). Depending on your nationality or immigration status, you may be exempt—or you might need to apply for a visa instead. Here’s a quick guide for those who don’t need an NZeTA:

Citizens of Visa-Exempt Countries (Not Yet in the NZeTA Scheme)

If your country is visa-exempt but hasn’t yet been included in the NZeTA program, you can still travel to New Zealand without applying for an NZeTA. However, if the requirement is extended to your country in the future, you’ll need to apply before traveling.

New Zealand Passport Holders

If you hold a New Zealand passport, you’re automatically exempt from the NZeTA requirement. New Zealand citizens do not need an NZeTA to enter their own country.

Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents

Australian citizens do not need an NZeTA to enter New Zealand. Australian permanent residents, however, do need an NZeTA—but they are exempt from paying the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).

New Zealand Citizens

New Zealand Citizens

New Zealand citizens are automatically exempt from the NZeTA requirement. If you're a New Zealand passport holder, you do not need to apply for an NZeTA to enter the country.

Australian Citizens & Permanent Residents

Australian Citizens & Permanent Residents

Australian citizens are not required to apply for an NZeTA. Australian permanent residents, however, must apply for an NZeTA to travel to New Zealand, but they will be exempt from paying the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).

New Zealand eTA (NZeTA)

The New Zealand eTA (NZeTA) is required for short visits such as tourism, business, transit, or visiting friends and family.

How Does the NZeTA Work?

  • Application Process: The NZeTA is entirely online. You can apply through the official Immigration New Zealand website or via authorized third-party services.
  • Processing Time: Most applications are processed within 3 working days, but in some cases, it can be faster (or slower if there are complications).
  • Validity: Once approved, the NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years (or until your passport expires), and it allows for multiple entries during that time.
  • Visit Duration: You can stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days (or 180 days for UK citizens), depending on your travel purpose.
New Zealand Visa Overview
  • Purpose: Covers a wide range of purposes, such as work, study, family reunification, and long-term stays.
  • Eligibility: Available to all nationalities, but each visa type (e.g., work visa, student visa, family visa) has its own set of eligibility rules.
  • Application Process:

Online application is available for most visas, but many visa types require an in-person appointment at a New Zealand Visa Application Centre (VAC) for biometrics or interviews.

  • Processing Time: Processing times vary by visa type, but it often takes several weeks or more for applications to be processed.
  • Validity :-
  • - The validity period depends on the visa type — it can range from 6 months (for short-term visitor visas) to several years (for work or residence visas).
  • - Work visas like the Tier 2 allow long-term stays, often several years, depending on the job offer and immigration conditions.

NZ eTA (New Zealand eTA) FAQs

The New Zealand eTA (NZ eTA) is a digital travel authorization that allows citizens from eligible countries to enter New Zealand for short visits, including tourism, business, or transit, without needing a full visa.

Travelers from eligible visa-waiver countries (e.g., the US, UK, EU, Canada, etc.) must apply for an NZ eTA before arriving in New Zealand.

With an NZ eTA, you can stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days. If you're traveling for business, tourism, or transit, this period should be sufficient.

No, the NZ eTA is for tourism, business meetings, or transit only. If you want to work in New Zealand, you must apply for a relevant work visa.

You’ll need:

  • A valid passport from an eligible country.
  • A debit or credit card to pay the application fee.
  • Basic details about your travel plans and personal information.

Most NZ eTA applications are processed within 10 minutes. However, it’s recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your departure in case of delays or complications.

Once approved, the NZ eTA will be sent to you electronically via email. You do not need a printed copy, but it’s a good idea to keep a digital or physical copy of the confirmation for your records.

If your NZ eTA is denied, you will be notified via email. In such cases, you may need to apply for a full New Zealand visa depending on your circumstances. Be sure to carefully review any reasons provided for the denial

Yes, if you get a new passport, you will need to apply for a new NZ eTA because the travel authorization is linked to your passport details.

No, the NZ eTA is only valid for travel to New Zealand. If you're traveling to the Republic of Ireland, you will need to check their entry requirements and apply for the appropriate visa if needed.

Yes, the NZ eTA is valid for multiple entries within its validity period (up to 2 years or until your passport expires), as long as each stay does not exceed the allowed duration (up to 90 days or 180 days for UK citizens).

The NZ eTA is typically valid for up to 2 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days per visit, depending on your nationality and the purpose of your travel.
